m> - RIGHT TO RECOVER: Yvonne Perry's Outstanding Book as a Way to
reach the Religious Right

Did you ever feel a sort of "click" when something just really
fits with you, and you realize, yes, this is what I was waiting for?

I felt that way when I first saw Barbra Streisand, on a flickering black
and white television set, and she opened her mouth and sang one word:
"People"…

Nobody had to draw me a diagram. Nobody had to whisper in my ear,
"Superstar".

It was just instantly obvious: millions of people felt the same way, and
one of the most amazing careers in show business history was launched.

I felt something very similar when I first talked to Yvonne Perry,
author of RIGHT TO RECOVER. We spoke at length, because she was writing
a book.

RIGHT TO RECOVER is a book to answer the religious issues of embryonic
stem cell research. It is written by a Christian, for Christians…

This is a vital book, and I cannot recommend it highly enough.

But don't take my word for it, look at the ten reviews—9 gave it
5 stars (highest recommendation) only one gave it 4 stars, and nobody
gave it any negative reviews.

Also, when a book is reviewed by experts, that is worth noticing. Diane
Wyshack recommends it—who is Diane Wyshack? Every day, Diane
searches the web and finds anything about stem cells, and sends those
news items to people like yourself, people who want to know what is
going on, and what to do about it. In other words, she reads at least a
little about anything to do with stem cells—if it is about stem
cells, she will know about it—and she recommends the book.

Look for Rayilyn Brown's review—Ray is Arizona superstar stem
cell advocate, outstanding member of the Parkinson's activist
community, fine writer, and a personal friend. Ray is always polite, but
she will take on anyone who talks trash about stem cells. She is famous
for contacting the Religious Right as individuals, and saying, "hi,
let's talk!" Ray had the same impression that Diane and I did:
this is an important book.

And THEN—I got a message from Karen Miner, saying there was this
wonderful new book, that I just had to read….

"Confused about the stem cell issue? Adult, embryonic, cord, fetal,
cloning…

It can seem quite complicated, but in her new book, RIGHT TO RECOVER:
Winning the Political and Religious Wars over Stem Cell Research in
America, Yvonne Perry has taken all aspects of stem cell research and
created a clear, reader-friendly explanation based on the scientific
truth, not on political or religious agendas."

Yvonne M. Perry is an award-winning author, freelance writer, editor and
the owner of Writers in the Sky Creative Writing Services. She has
co-written, edited, ghosted or formatted over twenty books for clients.
That's in addition to the articles, brochures, media releases, Web text
and newsletters she has created!

DID YOU KNOW…

…that the term "embryonic" stem cell research is a misnomer?
The research is not performed on a fish-like embryo; it is conducted
outside the body on a cluster of cells known as a blastocyst.

…that fertilization and conception are two separate occurrences?
Many people believe they are one in the same and think that when an egg
is fertilized it is automatically an embryo. With in-vitro assistance as
part of the reproductive process, fertilization can occur inside or
outside the body. Conception can not. An embryo is the product of
conception which can only take place inside the uterus. Conception can
be confirmed by testing hCG levels in the mother's blood.

…that there is a difference between an embryo and a blastocyst? The
term embryo is used to refer to the first two months of development
after conception. Conception cannot occur in a laboratory. Only
blastocysts, eggs, sperm, zygotes and morulas exist in fertility
clinics.

…that adult stem cells and those found in cord blood and amniotic
fluid do not have the same properties? They can not do the same things.
They have distinctively different abilities.

…that there is Biblical proof that blastocystic stem cell research
is a gift from our Creator? Scriptures show that according to John 1:3,
"All things are created by God and without Him nothing has been
created that was created." Stem cell technology used to create
healing is part of God's perfect plan. We have the privilege to
carefully use the knowledge and abilities we are given.

…that the Bush Administration's right-wing stance on
blastocystic stem cell research is based on a minority opinion that
cannot be supported by scientific fact or scripture? Those in opposition
have no biological basis for believing that stem cells derived from 3-
to 5-day-old fertilized eggs cultivated in a laboratory are human
embryos.

Book Description

"Yvonne Perry's book enrages and inspires: it leaves you with the
feeling that something must be done, that it can be done, and that it
will be done-because we will do it. This book changes the equation."
-Don C. Reed, Roman Reed Spinal Cord Injury Research Act.

"… Yvonne Perry… has truly researched the research and spent
hundreds of hours to find the facts to share with the readers of RIGHT
TO RECOVER. Over the years I have read literally thousands of articles
and documents from around the world about this subject and RIGHT TO
RECOVER is the most complete work I have ever read. It provides an
honest evaluation and asks readers to consider the facts and then form
their own opinion instead of listening to people who have never
researched the subject.' -Reverend Dan Bloodworth, The Brian
Bloodworth Stroke and Head Injury Research Foundation

" In a world confused with chaos in regard to Stem cell research.
Yvonne Perry has moved beyond the political to the healing in her new
book " Right to Recover Winning the Political and Religious Wars over
Stem Cell Research in America" This educational book sheds light on the
way Americans view embryonic stem cell and provides well-researched
facts about all types of stem cell treatments throughout the world. This
book will shed light on the future, today. -Dr. Eric S. Kaplan, Author
of Dying to be Young, From Botox to Botulism and Lifestyles of the Fit
and Famous Finally, the truth about stem cell research.

"I search the Internet daily for articles on stem cell research to
pass along to other advocates. It's so maddening to constantly read the
oppositions blatant lies concerning stem cell research. -Diane Wyshak,

Why can't we help the ill?, August 3, 2007

By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers (RAWSISTAZ.com)

"Yvonne Perry's RIGHT TO RECOVER has a wealth of information
regarding stem cell research, not only in the United States, but in the
world. She covers the reasons given for Bush vetoing the Stem Cell
Research Bill, as well as puts down the myths that surround those
issues. For instance, in vitro fertilization does not constitute a
living human being. A cell and sperm that are united outside a woman's
body are blastocyst cells and cannot become a human being until placed
in a woman's womb. The placing of the fertilized egg in a woman's womb
where it can grow and become a human being is conception. Until that
point, the cells are undifferentiated cells that can become any part of
the body, which is why it so important to the research. These cells can
be used to grow new body organs, such as livers or kidneys. They can
also be used to find cures for spinal and brain injuries as well as
replacing damaged brain and nerve cells that cause muscular sclerosis
and Alzheimer's. If these fertilized eggs are not used for research,
they are thrown away which is not very helpful to those who truly need a
cure. There has been much talk of adult stem cell research, but the
difference is, those cells are already determinate parts of the body and
are therefore not universal as the blastocyst cells are.

"Ms. Perry lists many diseases that I had no idea could be covered
by stem cell research. It is indeed, a real horror for the seriously
ill, that this bill was vetoed, when it obviously can do so much good.
The RIGHT TO RECOVER also covers the history of this country and how
religion has come to play such a large part in the government of today.
While the subject is quite technical, she breaks it down so even a lay
person can understand the concepts and the reasons for stem cell
research. She gives the information and lets you decide. There is also a
chapter regarding what each individual can do to help. It is indeed an
enlightening book that should be read by everyone in the United States.

RIGHT TO RECOVER AZNPF BOOK CLUB PICK FALL 2007, August 4, 2007

By Rayilyn Lee Brown (Surprise AZ USA) - See all my reviews

"RIGHT TO RECOVER is a comprehensive, thoughtful and
thought-provoking treatment of the current controversial stem cell wars.
The Arizona Chapter of the National Parkinson's Foundation (AZNPF) is
pleased to recommend it to people with Parkinson's disease, their
families and caregivers, politicians, voters and the general public. It
is a must read, must buy when it becomes available October 1, 2007.

"Scientific terms are explained in ways the average reader can
understand and arguments pro and con for different kinds of stem cell
research are carefully explored. The author favors all stem cell
research and has taken great pains to insure the accuracy and balance of
her reporting.

"This educational book sheds light on the way Americans view
embryonic stem cell biology by providing well-researched facts about all
types of stem cell (bone marrow, amniotic and cord blood) treatments
presently being used and their restorative effects. It also covers the
research being done with stem cells from in-vitro fertilized eggs on
laboratory animals and presents findings to support its curative
potential on humans.

"The information in this book was derived from extensive research,
personal interviews, emails and other correspondence with national and
international medical doctors, research scientists, religious leaders
and elected officials, as well as stories from patients who hope to
improve their lives through stem cell implants and research. Bible
references are used to show why a four to five day old mass of human
cell is NOT an embryo and how God has given us stem cell technology as a
scientific gift for healing.

"The topic of stem cell research is making headlines in every
country. You may have read articles and heard stories that are not
exactly true. This books presents the facts and challenges readers to
think for themselves rather then accept the opinions of political or
religious leaders. RIGHT TO RECOVER does not present fairy tales about
how stem cells can miraculously cure any disease and does not promote
fear-based rumors people may have heard from the pulpit on Sunday.
Instead, it truthfully delves into the political and religious issues
surrounding blastocyst stem cell research.

When I started reading "Right to Recover: Winning the Political and
Religious Wars over Stem Cell Research in America," I thought that it
would be interesting and that as an Executive Director of a healthcare
not-for-profit dealing with this issue, I might glean some new
knowledge. The book delivered far more than I ever expected. I was
completely hooked by it from beginning to end. The author, Yvonne Perry,
does an excellent job in defining stem cell research and in making the
case for funding of the different types of stem cell research,
especially blastocyst (or embryonic) stem cell research.

Government funding for stem cell research has been a huge controversy
over the past several years, especially during President Bush's
administration. The author lists the American Heritage's dictionary
definition of embryo as: an organism in its early developmental stage,
before it has distinctive form; a rudimentary stage." The blastocyst
cells do not even qualify as an embryo because they have never been
implanted in a woman's uterus to begin the developmental stage. The
cells that are in question to be used for research are the ones that
were not used in in-vitro and are being discarded as medical waste.

The author makes great points about the use of the blastocysts headed
for disposal "No life or death has occurred in the process. The cells
scientists want to use for research are the leftover IV-Bs; no one is
suggesting that the IVF be used to create blastocysts specifically for
use in research. Give them funding to use the ones already headed for
the biohazard containers. Let them find a way to help the living,
breathing human beings who are suffering."

So much fear is surrounding stem cell research and cloning that the
amazing potential to prevent and cure diseases, rebuild bodies and so
much more gets lost in these heated debates. I learned so much about the
current and potential research going on in this country and around the
world in this book. Perry does a great job in bringing in Biblical text
that could potentially support this research. The only flaw that I found
in the book was in expressing her views on the more fundamental
religions. I happen to agree to with her views, but I think that adding
them limits the numbers of people with more fundamental views that might
read the book and learn the truth about this subject.

Overall, I found the book to be very well written, eye-opening and
informative. It is written in an easy-to-read manner. I highly recommend
"Right to Recover" to those who are sitting on the fence with this
issue.

Organized Pursuant To The

CALIFORNIA STEM CELL RESEARCH AND CURES ACT

CIRM Grants Administration Policy for For-Profit Organizations

The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) will hold an
interested persons' meeting to solicit public input relating to the
above-named policy.

Background:

The mission of the CIRM is to foster and promote stem cell research with
the aim of improving human health. A secondary goal is to advance the
biotech industry in California to benefit the state's economy by
creating projects, jobs, and therapies that will generate new tax
revenue.

The CIRM believes that commercial research organizations can make
critical contributions towards accomplishing the Institute's mission
and realizing the vision of Proposition 71. Increased interest by the
commercial sector in stem cell-related research projects would encourage
the successful translation of basic research discoveries into commercial
products for public use.

To enable the participation of the commercial sector in CIRM-sponsored
research initiatives, the CIRM is developing a Grants Administration
Policy for For-Profit Organizations. This policy will serve as the
general terms and conditions governing the selection, funding,
monitoring and termination of CIRM grant awards to for-profit entities.
The regulations that ensue from this policy statement will carry the
force and effect of law, and by accepting a CIRM grant award, grantee
organizations agree to comply with the provisions to be set forth in
this policy statement for the entire project period of the grant, and
beyond this project period for certain documents and reports. The
proposed Grants Administration Policy is intended to be similar in form
and scope to the CIRM Grants Administration Policy for Academic and
Non-Profit Institutions. The CIRM expects that the policy statement for
for-profit organizations will differ from the policy for non-profits in
various aspects of administration, and has proposed certain amendments
to the existing policy that specifically effect for-profit
organizations.

The proposed amendments can be viewed at this URL:

07.pdf

>

The CIRM seeks input from for-profit entities and the public regarding
these amendments as well as other operational considerations that
uniquely impact the commercial sector.

Among the points to be discussed:

* Amendments to the CIRM Grants Administration Policy for Academic and
Non-Profit Institutions as identified in the document listed above.

* Other points for consideration

The CIRM encourages attendees to provide input on these issues and to
raise additional issues for consideration. Written comments may be sent
in advance by email to khari@cirm.ca.gov, or may be addressed to CIRM at
210 King Street, San Francisco, California, 94107, to the attention of
Kumar Hari, Ph.D. or Patricia Olson, Ph.D. For questions about this
meeting, please contact Kumar Hari at (415) 396-9123.
